Going from 4th to 5th can be a bit strange on the LS. On my 1996, I have to shift with more "force" into 5th. The only way I know I'm in that gear is the motor slows slightly and "sounds" different. 4th to 5th isn't much of an upshift on the Savage, but certainly does give a bit more speed per RPM which is good. What you've described is just about what I experience, and is just another "quirk" of the Savage, which is not bad as all bikes have their "quirks." I really like my machine, and thought I've only got 2500 miles on it I feel I know its characteristics pretty well, especially the 4th to 5th gear change.
